The St. Mary River running out of the Purcell mountains is a dry fly fishing dream. Wild Westslope Cutthroat and Cutbows are eager and willing to take a fly. The St. Mary River is a scenic float which offers superb fishing and low fishing pressure due to limited public access. This river is an oasis for any fly fisherman looking for a day on a river that promises plentiful quality Cutthroat and the possibility of targeting Bull Trout. As the likeliness of not seeing another soul during your float is high, it offers serenity at its best.
The Bull River is isolated from paved roads making days up here seem like you are alone on the river and in some sections you just might be. Running through some very rugged mountains of the Rockies makes the scenery breathtaking. With high numbers of Westslope Cutthroats and low angling pressure, the action can be non-stop and your day is bound to be an experience not soon forgotten. A section of this river below the hydroelectric dam has multiple species that can be targeted, the ever willing Cutthroat Trout, aggressive Bull Trout and hard fighting Rainbow Trout.
The Skookumchuck River is a stunning fishery, as the Cutthroat can grow to enormous size and trophy Bull Trout opportunities present themselves to a determined angler. Walk and Wades into this river can provide a day of enormous fish and leave you in awe of the sheer numbers of Bull Trout stacked in a run.
The Elk River is a world renowned fishery containing quality Westslope Cutthroat Trout as well as Bull Trout. This river flows through the Rocky mountains, down the Elk Valley providing a scenic view that isn’t easily forgotten.

Growing up in the Kootenays has provided me the opportunity to fish these local rivers for 20+ years. I have been guiding since 2018 for a reputable company in the area. I was given the opportunity to acquire their Rod Days which has allowed my dreams of owning and operating my own guiding company to become a reality. Fishing has always been a passion of mine, and I have been fortunate enough to pass that love for fishing on to my wife Amy. We are very excited to give our children the opportunity to be immersed in the life of fishing full time and show them everything the rivers have to offer.
Fishing the East Kootenays is an incredible experience regardless of the river you choose to fish. I still get as excited to fish anywhere in the valley as if it were the first time. Between the ever changing scenery or the fishing action that is experienced, every day is truly unique. Over the years showing my family, friends and clients these areas through fishing and float trips has been a highlight of my life. I am extremely grateful to now have the opportunity to continue that through Tight Lines Fly Fishing.
